Adductor muscles – Adductor muscle tendinitis
Inflammation in the muscle tendons caused by overuse can lead to pain. Sports activities like sprinting, hurdling, football and horse riding can cause overuse in adductors. Unresolved injuries like groin strain may also cause tendinitis.
The muscles include the adductor magnus, gracilis, longus, brevis, the pectineus and the tendons any of these could be inflamed. The pain is like a groin strain but the onset is slow and chronic in nature.
Cause of injury
Tight gluteal muscles. Repetitive stress into the adductor muscles. Previous groin strain injury.
Symptoms
Pain when sprinting or running. Pain in the groin. Pain when bringing the legs together against resistance.
Complications unattended
If it is not treated, tendinitis of the adductor muscles may result in injury and imbalance to the muscles of the hip joint. It can cause a tear of one or more of the adductor muscles.
Treatment
Ice and rest. Anti-inflammatory diet and medication. Then massage and heat to promote healing and blood circulation.
Prevention and treatment
Rehabilitation begins with stretching and strengthening exercises with gradual reintroduction into sports activity for the muscles that are affected. Put heat packs on the affected area first before exercise, then warm up is important to prepare, muscles for any activity. Stretching the opposing abductors and strengthening the adductors can help prevent this injury. Rehabilitation of other hip injuries and all groin pulls will also prevent problems.
Problems are seen following therapy with tendinitis. Additional help may be necessary from a sports medicine specialist if pain and restricted mobility in the hip continues.
