Sprained knee

The sprain usually happens when playing football. It is caused by force applied to the outside of the knee joint. A force applied to the outside of the knee often causes stretching medial collateral ligament and the inside of the knee to open. The existence of the stretch determines whether the medial ligament stretches, and tears completely or only partly.

Cause of injury

A lot of force is applied to the exterior of the knee joint.

Sprained knee symptoms

The medial part of the knee is painful. Swelling and tenderness. Pain on weight-bearing and instability in the knee.

Complications if left unattended

The ligament might repair itself in some cases. if left untreated that can result in a more severe sprain. Instability and the pain in the knee might not resolve. Any activity on the painful knee could result in injuries to other ligaments as a result of instability.

RICER. Immobilization. Anti-inflammatory diet and medication.

Sprained knee rehabilitation and prevention

Based upon the severity of the sprain, introduction back into activity and good rest might be enough. Through the phase of rehabilitation, strengthening braces may be required for more severe sprains. The more severe sprains might require rest and immobilization from any activity. Other equipment and stationary bicycles could be used as a range of motion and strength start to return. Ensuring adequate strength in the thigh muscles and conditioning before beginning any activity.  It is susceptible to injury to the knee will help avoid these kinds of injuries.

Long-term prognosis

The medial collateral ligament often heals well. However, there’s residual looseness in the medical area of the knee in some cases.  Rarely, surgery is needed to repair the ligaments. Meniscal tearing might cause a severe sprain that requires surgery.
