Iliotibial band syndrome

Iliotibial band syndrome (ITB) refers to excessive friction or pulling of the ITB over the greater trochanter of the femur. It is near the hip or the lateral condyle at the knee. Tension or this friction causes significant pain and inflammation once the hips and the knees flex or stretch. Bursitis may ensue.

Cause of injury

Friction or tension of the ITB. Repetitive knee and hip flexion and extension whereas the tensor fascia late is contracted, for example with jogging. Muscle imbalances. Tight ITB and TFL.

Iliotibial band syndrome symptoms

Pain with extension and flexion of the knee. Pain in the knee over the lateral condyle.

Complications if left unattended

The accompanying TFL and  ITB  get tight due to inflammation and pain. If left unattended this may result in more injury and chronic pain to the hip and the knee.

Iliotibial band syndrome treatment

RICER. Anti-inflammatory diet and medication. Heat and massage have plenty of benefits to encourage blood circulation and healing.

Iliotibial band syndrome rehabilitation and prevention

Increasing flexibility when there is no pain will help with faster recovery. When the pain has subsided, increasing the flexibility and strength of the muscles of the thighs and hips is important.  Also, developing balance will help prevent injuries in future. Identifying and correcting any mistakes in running form will also help prevent the recurrence of the injury.

Long-term prognosis

ITB syndrome can be treated well without any effects. Pain and inflammation could return if the activity is resumed and form corrections have to be made to prevent potential issues in future.
